    Coral reefs represent a level of biodiversity that can rival tropical rain forests.  Coral reef communities are characterized by an amazing diversity of marine creatures including: sponges, anemones, hard corals, soft corals, hydroids, worms, shrimps, lobsters, crabs, snails, scallops, oysters, octopi, squids, barnacles, sea stars, brittle stars, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, tunicates and many more.  On this coral head, the brown bowl sponge first caught my attention.  Their colours are so rich and they are often home to small shrimp and crabs.  If you look closely you can see a small crab in between the two brown bowl sponges.   How many species can you count on this coral head?   • Old Growth BC

    The Francis/King Regional park was originally home to the Saanich people who relied on the forests and open spaces for food and shelter. The Saanich took only the wood they needed from the giant cedar forests for their canoes, clothing, household wares and ceremonial objects. The Douglas Fir trees in this area are estimated to be over 500 years old. I chose to capture two images from one ancient tree that has been down for a long time.  It is still contributing to the forest with a carpet of moss as it slowly returns to the soil.   • Turtle High Five

    Named for their narrow, pointed beaks, Hawksbill Turtles are typically found on coral reefs where they feed on sponges, sea anemones and jelly fish. Sea Turtles are the living representatives of a group of reptiles that have lived on earth for over one hundred million years. I call this image Turtle High Five as it looks like he is giving us a wave. This image is one of a series taken where I was down low in the sand watching this turtle feed on a sponge. As they say timing is everything and I was able to capture one fin up as he started to lift up and swim off. This image was taken in Little Cayman in 2019.
